If you want to see the real nature behind these thinly veiled threats, just quietly refuse to explain yourself when others hint that you’re somehow being dishonorable. Although it won’t seem so at first, your reward will be to watch their smiling faces turn upside down, and—no longer able to maintain its socially contrived disguise—to see therein a dark, fearful, miserable little “self” that can’t help but despise anything or anyone who dares reveal it to itself.

The blessing in these moments of being reviled—when you see revealed the desperation and destitution of your accuser—is the spiritual liberation that comes only with the clarity of seeing who you can no longer be and what you can no longer serve.
